Teeth Whitening
It is a simple fact of life that as we age, our smile changes and our teeth become dull. The process of losing your whiteness can be accelerated by drinking cola, coffee and tea, as well as by smoking or eating many types of foods, such as curries. Whilst brushing or polishing is essential for good oral health, it isn’t enough to prevent the darkening of your teeth over time. Having a beautiful smile may be easier than you think and teeth whitening makes a huge difference where the whitening can reverse these effects, leaving your teeth looking youthfully white again.
Teeth whitening is a process where the discoloured teeth are ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes discolouration and staining through the use of safe chemical agents. It is a risk-free procedure when carried out under professional supervision and doesn’t involve any anaesthetic or drilling. It also won’t harm or weaken your teeth in any way.
People often purchase whitening products in shops but most are not effective because of the concentration of the whitener in the products. Some unregulated providers are not insured, practice illegally and often cause severe damage to patient’s teeth.
Tooth whitening carried out by Surrey Dental Practice’s Cosmetic Team ensures the health and safety of your gums and teeth whilst giving you optimal teeth whitening results.
At Surrey Dental Practice, we use Home Whitening and also the renowned In-house Zoom Teeth Whitening system that is guaranteed to lighten your teeth by a number of shades. Before we carry out any teeth whitening treatment on our patients, we will carefully examine their teeth and recommend a teeth whitening treatment suitable for them. The examination will look at the nature and cause of the tooth discolouration. Once the analysis has been carried out, then we will discuss the various types of whitening procedures available, making sure you know what’s involved and how long each course of treatment will take.
The degree of whiteness usually depends on how severe the discolouration was in the first place. We can whiten both natural and artificial teeth, though several visits may be needed to achieve the results you are looking for. However, teeth whitening won’t work on dental restorations such as amalgam fillings, metal or porcelain crowns.
Zoom Whitening
Zoom teeth whitening can offer extremely noticeable results within just one hour – up to 6 shades whiter. Our patients regularly tell us how confident they feel once the treatment has been completed.
your There are several standard steps to the Zoom Teeth whitening procedure:
- Firstly, the current shade of your teeth is recorded.
- Your teeth will then be polished with pumice, a grainy material used to remove plaque from the surface of your teeth.
- Retractors are used to keep your cheeks, lips and tongue well away from the whitening gel.
- A gum barrier is applied along the gumline to protect them from exposure to the gel.
- Teeth are then coated with a gel on the front of the teeth.
- An ultra-violet light is used to activate the gel.
- Once the optimum shade has been reached, the teeth are rinsed. Fluoride is applied to ease any sensitivity.
- Every Zoom Whitening treatment includes a take-home kit for 3 days to enhance and consolidate the lighter tooth colour.
Once the treatment has been completed, you will be advised to avoid foods or beverages with high levels of colouring for at least 24 hours. These include coffee, tea, tomato sauce, black grapes and red wine. Smoking or tobacco of any sort should also be avoided.
Home Whitening
Your dentist will take a mould of your upper and lower teeth for the whitening trays to be prepared by the lab. For the Home Whitening treatment, the whitening trays will be given to you along with a simple set of instructions for you to follow, to ensure your safety. You will be given tubes of whitening gel to apply onto the trays, which need to be worn daily for 8 hours during the day/overnight. After 14 days, your teeth will feel brighter, cleaner and fresher.
Treatment will need to be repeated at least once every six months for the best results. Should your teeth be badly stained, then you might need to repeat the treatment more often. You will be asked to avoid citrus fruits and other acidic foods (fruit juice, wine, fizzy drinks and yoghurt) during the process as this may contribute to sensitivity.
